September 21-26, 2026

At UTA, safety is our top priority. For Utah Rail Safety Week, we’re joining Utah Operation Lifesaver and safety partners across the state to share one simple reminder: Every Sign Tells a Story.

Rail safety signs, signals, and markings are there for a reason. Whether you’re driving, biking, or walking near railroad tracks, knowing what they mean can help prevent a life-changing collision.

Throughout Utah Rail Safety Week, learn what to watch for around tracks and crossings, see how UTA and our partners are promoting rail safety across Utah, and help us share the message with your community.

Safe Driving Education: Monday, September 21

Utah Rail Safety Week begins with a focus on safe driving around railroad tracks and crossings.

No matter how you travel, pay attention to railroad signs and signals, stay alert near crossings, and never try to beat a train.

Operation Clear Track: Tuesday, September 22

Law enforcement and rail safety partners will be at railroad crossings throughout Utah as part of Operation Clear Track, a nationwide effort focused on preventing unsafe behavior near railroad tracks and crossings.

Outreach and enforcement activities are planned at:

  • 500 West in Provo
  • Ballpark Station in Salt Lake City
  • Center Street in North Salt Lake
  • Central Pointe Station in South Salt Lake
  • Freedom Boulevard in Provo

Trespass Prevention: Wednesday, September 23

Wednesday focuses on preventing trespassing on or near railroad tracks and connecting people with resources that can help keep our communities safe.

Railroad tracks and the surrounding right-of-way are not safe places to walk, gather, or take shortcuts. Trains can approach faster and more quietly than expected, and they cannot stop quickly or swerve to avoid someone on the tracks.

Throughout the day, UTA and our partners will share information and resources focused on trespass prevention, mental health, and recognizing situations where someone may need help.

See Something? Say Something!

Keeping our transit system safe takes all of us. If you see something concerning while riding UTA or around the transit system, report it:

  • Call UTA Police Dispatch: 801-287-EYES (3937)
  • Text UTA Police: Text 274-637 (CRIMES). Start your message with UTATIP, followed by your message.
  • Call 911: If there is an immediate emergency or danger, call 911.

Reporting suspicious or unsafe activity can help UTA Police respond quickly and keep riders, employees, and communities safe.

Mental Health and Crisis Resources

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health, suicide, or substance use crisis, call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Transit Thursday: September 24

Come celebrate Utah Rail Safety Week with UTA at Salt Lake Central Station from 4–6 p.m.!

Riders and community members can stop by for fun, interactive ways to learn more about staying safe around trains, tracks, and crossings.

Test your rail safety knowledge with trivia, take a photo with life-size safety sign characters, meet UTA’s K9 officer and Daphne the therapy dog, and connect with UTA staff and our rail safety partners. Stickers and prizes will also be available while supplies last.

Football Friday: September 25

Utah Operation Lifesaver will bring rail safety education into local communities on Football Friday, sharing safety information with students, families, and fans at high school football games across Utah.

Educational materials will be distributed at:

  • Fremont High School in Plain City
  • Jordan High School in Sandy
  • Skyridge High School in Lehi
  • Viewmont High School in Bountiful
  • West High School in Salt Lake City

Trains Don't Swerve

Trains are bigger, heavier, and faster than they may appear. And unlike a car, a train can’t quickly stop or swerve to avoid something in its path.

Check out UTA’s Trains Don’t Swerve video series to learn more about making safe decisions around trains, tracks, and crossings.

Our Partners

This effort is made possible through collaboration with Utah Operation Lifesaver, a nonprofit public safety education and awareness organization dedicated to reducing collisions, fatalities, and injuries at highway-rail crossings and to reducing trespassing on or near railroad tracks.
